plan of marco rubio when the party is in need of support of the latino community and one of those things we thought you should know. >>> plus, here's the question -- should the justice department sue lance armstrong to get back sponsorship money? we are talking nearly $100 million. [ male announcer ] ahh... retirement. sit back, relax, pull out the paper and...what!!?? an article that says a typical family pays $155,000 in "wall street" fees on their 401(k)s? seriously? seriously. you don't believe it? search it, "401k 155k." then go to e-trade. and roll over your old 401(k)s to a new e-trade retirement account. we have every type of retirement account. none of them charge annual fees, and all of them offer low cost investments. why? because we're not your typical wall street firm, that's why. so you keep more of your money. e-trade. less for us. more for you. >>> nate said, right after ben died, he said -- this is tough, but he said, you promised you would protect us. >> yeah. >> and i did promise them this. >> sure. >> you know? >> yeah. >> yeah. >> so, what do i say to him? i c
. >> and, in fact, marco rubio, chuck, has put out a statement saying that nothing the president is proposing would have stopped the massacre at sandy hook. president obama is targeting the rights of law-abiding citizens instead of what caused the violence. that is a very strong response from someone who's talked about as a 2016 potential candidate. >> and he also accused the president of abusing his executive power in the 23 actions. when you read the 23 actions, frankly, these are very weak directives. there's not much more the white house could do. they've got a whole bunch of things out there, but to call it an overreach is a big, big stretch there. but you're right, andrea, that's presidential politics. the most important responses, though, on this front have come from the two people in charge of putting legislation on the floor of the house and the senate. and speaker boehner's spokesperson said we'll be happy to look at any proposals that pass the senate. well, what did harry reid say last weekend about voting on any bills having to do with gun legislation? they are not go
, marco rubio, rand paul, ted cruz are right out there front in opposing president obama on gun safety. so what happened? why is the gop, the party of guns over people? our guests are congresswoman carolyn mccarthy, a democrat of new york, and cynthia tucker, a pulitzer prize winning columnist. thank you both for joining us. you have been in this fight for so long, congresswoman mccarthy. i have to ask you, is there something out there in the water that's changed or are we confronting the old power of the nra? >> well, certainly we are confronting them. we'll always be able to confront them, but this time is different, and i think that the american people are realizing on how radical they actually are. you know, when you see the polls in most people in america support on what we're trying to do, even nra members, so that this time is different. i think it's a combination of the gun violence that we have seen over the last couple years, but what happened in connecticut, that went over the top. we had a hearing yesterday afternoon, and i have to tell you, victims that i have been working wit
, senator bilbo. marco rubio last night accused the president of not believing in the second amendment. here is a guy clearly running for president. let's take a look. >> i actually think the president, and he just doesn't have the guts to admit it, isn't a believer in the second amendment. the second amendment is in the constitution. i didn't write the constitution. neither did you, neither did he. if he doesn't want the second amendment to be in the constitution or if he wants to reform the second amendment, have the guts to admit that. >> congresswoman mccarthy, what's this -- where is this talk coming from, this street corner lingo, guts, guys getting together, guts, the president has the guts. a little respect might be in order for the president of the united states from this guy, talking about a guy not having guts. it's street corner talk from rubio. your thoughts. we're talking about guns here. >> we're talking about guns here, yes, but we all swear to uphold the constitution. i believe in upholding the constitution. the supreme court already came out that a person has a right to own
look at immigration, as marco rubio is suggesting?>> i tnk bh parties take a fresh look at immigration because you can't just focus on that, and i applaud senator rubio for trying to find a way particularly to address issues with children who are caught up in some of the immigration debate. andrea, until we secure the borders and we actually find ways to enforce the current laws that are on the books with an understaffed and underfunded ice, immigrations and customs enforcement agency, i think it's hard to get to the final step, and that is pathways to citizenship, and i think all these things are part of a solution. look, i favor vastly more legal immigration. what we don't want is more illegal immigration, and neither do people that are here lawfully who have come from other countries. my grandfather came lawfully 100 years ago. we need more of that. we have an arbitrary number of guest worker permits. we need to increase those to meet the economic needs of the country. i think you have to talk about all of these together. for the republican party we've got to make sure we know that
? is he willing to come to the table with marco rubio, or does he really want to keep bashing more radical elements of the republican party? does i want to deal this year or take it to 2014? those are the questions. >> that's sort of the administration beyond the party. e.j. >> what you are seeing from obama is someone who is willing now to say right up front this is what i want, and then let's deal. there's a lot of talk that the assault weapons ban can't get enough votes. he didn't say i should take that out of my plan as a concession to the other side. i want to put it in there, and let's negotiate it. maybe if i can't get that, i'll get everything else. the other point is he -- during the campaign in 2008, it may have been as early as 2007, he liked comparing himself to railroad. what's significant about what michael said is reagan wasn't just a guy who had eight years in mind. he wanted to build a long conservative ascend yancey, and what obama has in mind is i won't get everything done in these four years. i may have a republican house the entire time, but i can begin to build a move
reform -- when you have barack obama and senator marco rubio essentially in a similar place on immigration reform, i think you're going to get that. >> does the clock run out mid 2014? >> well, i think the record here is about a two-year kind of runway. that sounds about right to me. >> i think it's going to be shorter than that to be honest. let's not forget the fiscal issues and budget issues. he has 30 seconds before he has to sort of dive into those again. the next six months are really going to be full. >> cluck gabriel, sort of the same question to you. the rule of thumb is that the president has about 18 months to get his second term agenda underway and rolling and of course we know that an awful lot of presidential second terms have been marred by either major slips or scandals that impede the attainment of those lofty goals. >> i think 18 months is probably generous, tyler. but, you know, if he essentially does move out quickly on gun control and immigration, you know, immigration is a real wedge issue. that's an issue that democrats really have the potential to rea
. the "new york times," senator marco rubio is attempting to rally fellow republicans around the idea of major immigration reform, advocating for fair treatment for foreigners who play by the rules but not rule out legal status for those who enter the country illegally. representative paul ryan has already endorsed rubio's plan. legislators find 39 states are not considering new gun regulations and some may relax their gun laws. having more guns available for self-defense may curb gun violence. >>> the "washington post." clarence thomas broke a 7-year silence during oral arguments. what he was saying was unclear. sources say he was joking about the ivy league and the k transcript only partially showed what he said. he hasn't spoken since 1996. >>> walmart plans to hire any veteran who wants a job and officials project it will lead to 100,000 veterans in five years. >> that's a promise, significant. >> great news. also really quickly again, we want to show while we're doing the papers, the daily news, nra, coming up on the anniversary of newtown, where 20 young children were killed, ha
already have prominent senators like marco rubio of florida coming out with proposals very similar to what president obama has called for and a lot of national republicans now saying that they know this is an issue they need to make progress on, as well. to nicolle wallace on this, as well. you also used the word for governor jeb bush of florida, one of those republicans, also saying this is the key to the republican party's future. >> right, and as a republican, marco maybe try to have them topple the power structures here in washington because they understand at a philosophical level, at a policy level and political level that our very survival as a party depends on getting this right and last republican or last president to have really put the power of the oval office behind this push for immigration reform was george w. bush. in hindsight it was a precious moment we let slip through our fingers. then he had senator ten kennedy and senator mccain and george w. bush and those three at the time were giants in washington could get -- couldn't get it done i think illustrates how high that m
some new young people here who can really add a lot. marco rubio is a perfect illustration. he's bright, he's smart. i think he can help bring republicans along and we have some good people in the democrats who can do the same thing. >> thanks for your insight, senator. always good to see you. >> nice to be with you. >> thank you. >> thanks. i'm noting that noted musical lover, orrin hatch. we'll go to the break. thank you, james taylor. our coverage will continue after this. we'll go right back to the white house, chuck todd. ♪ hungry for the best? it's eb. want to give your family the very best in taste, freshness, and nutrition? it's eb. want to give them more vitamins, omega 3s, and less saturated fat? it's eb. eggland's best eggs. eb's. the only eggs that make better taste and better nutrition... easy. eggland's best eggs. better taste. better nutrition. better eggs. it's eb. i just served my mother-in-law your chicken noodle soup but she loved it so much... i told her it was homemade. everyone tells a little white lie now and then. but now she wants my recipe [ clears his throat
